July 10, 2014

The July meeting of the Ravenna Township Board was called to order on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. by Supervisor Ken Punter. Pledge to the Flag was led by County Commissioner Marv Engle.  Prayer was led by Trustee Elmer Hoyle.  Members present were:  Ken Punter, Supervisor; Sonja Patterson, Treasurer; Penny Sherman, Clerk; Elmer Hoyle and Bruce Yonker, Trustee; Greg Crowley, Fire Chief; Marv Engle, County Commissioner and two residents.  Motion by Yonker, support by Hoyle to approve Agenda.  Motion carried.  Motion by Hoyle, support by Yonker to approve minutes from the June 12, 2014 Township Board Meeting.  Motion carried.

Citizens Comments: Resident spoke regarding the way they were notified that they needed to clean-up their property.  They were very upset that they were not notified first by a letter instead of having someone come directly to their home.  They suggested that residents be notified by mail in any such case.


Assessor: Board of Review will be held on July 22, 2014 at 1:00 p.m.  This is for clerical errors.

Fire Board:  Call report: 12 Medicals, 2 Fires and 2 P.I.’s.  The new steel roof has been completed on the original Fire Station.  Jon Miller has started his MFR training.  Motion by Hoyle, support by Patterson to amend last months motion regarding the sale of the old tanker to state that the selling price is $3500.00.  Motion carried.  Motion by Hoyle, support by Yonker to approve the purchase of 12 new sets of turn-out gear for the Firemen at a price of approximately $21,000.00.  Motion carried.  Fire Department will be hosting a Pig Roast at Dog Daze on July 18th from 5:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.  People interested in a burn permit may go the web site: www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits.  Address signs are available to purchase for $20.00, if anyone is interested they should call the Township Hall at 231-853-6205.

Building Inspector: 3 permits were issued.  A FOIA request was received asking for a quarterly list of submitted building permits.

Museum/Library: Vandalism is still occurring.  Security cameras will be installed 7-11-14.  Friends of the Library will be hosting a Mad Hatters Tea Party on Saturday, August 2, 2014 from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.

Cemetery: Everything is going fine.

Planning Commission: Met on 7-8-14 regarding one boundary line adjustment request.  They are also continuing to work on updating the Master Plan..

Zoning Administrator: No report.

Chamber of Commerce: Did not meet.

New Business: Culvert on Seba Road south of Farr Road needs to be replaced.  FEMA funds are available for this project with the remaining balance being cost shared between Ravenna Township and Muskegon County Road Commission.  The cost to Ravenna Township will be $17,930.00.  Motion by Punter, support by Patterson to cost share the replacement of the culvert on Seba Road south of Farr Road.  Motion carried.   Three bids have been received to construct a sidewalk around the Township Hall.  Estimates were as follows: TS MAX Poured Walls-$4817.00, RA Holmes-$4985.00 and Schippers Concrete-$5575.00.  Motion by Patterson, support by Yonker to hire TS Max Poured for a price of $4817.00.  Motion carried 4-0.  (Sherman abstained due to family relationship).  Motion by Hoyle, support by Yonker to appoint: June Grover, Greg Grover, Edna Krueger, Sonja Patterson, Penny Sherman and Glenna Wright as Election Inspectors for the August 5, 2014 Primary.  Motion carried.  District 5 County Commissioner Marv Engle was here to answer any questions we may.  Mr. Engle is running unopposed in the August Primary but will face a challenger in the November Election.  (District 5 includes all of Fruitport Township, Sullivan Township and Ravenna Township)

Unfinished Business: Punter reported that brining hasn’t occured as of yet, but should begin soon.

Treasurers Report:  Patterson presented Treasurer’s report.  Motion by Hoyle, support by Yonker to pay all bills including the $11,391.00 roofing bill for the Fire Station.  Motion carried.  Motion by Sherman, support by Hoyle to accept Treasurer’s Report.  Motion carried.

Correspondence: Letter was received from MTA.
