The August meeting of the Ravenna Township Board was called to order on Thursday, August 15, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at the Ravenna Township Hall by Supervisor Elmer Hoyle. Pledge to the Flag was led by Fire Chief Greg Crowley. Prayer was led by Supervisor Hoyle.  Members present were:  Elmer Hoyle, Supervisor; Sonja Patterson, Treasurer; Penny Sherman, Clerk; and Bruce Yonker, Trustee.  Trustee John Bonthuis was absent.  Also present were Fire Chief Greg Crowley, Senior Activities Coordinator Peggy Manzer and one resident.  Motion by Patterson, support by Yonker to approve the agenda with the correction of the meeting time.  Motion carried.   Motion by Yonker, support by Patterson to approve the minutes from the July 12, 2018 Meeting.  Motion carried.

Citizens Comments: None.


Assessor: Board of Review was held on Tuesday, July 17, 2018.  Most were PRE corrections and one poverty exemption.

Fire Board:  Call report:  18 Medicals and 3 P.I.’s (1 assist to Casnovia) and 3 Fires (1 assist to Grant and 1 assist to Dalton).  The new Porta Tank lift is on and working. The Fire Department Pork Dinner at Dog Daze was very well attended and the Firemen would like to thank everyone for their support.  Bonthuis Enterprise has installed the new concrete and it looks nice.  A letter will be sent to a former Fireman asking for his equipment to be turned back in.  The SCBA equipment should arrive in October.  People interested in a burn permit may go the web site: www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits.   Address signs are available to purchase for $20.00, if anyone is interested they should call the Township Hall at 231-853-6205.

Building Inspector: Eight permits were issued:  2 Building, 2 Electrical and 4 Mechanical. The 10% reimbursement check from MTS was $103.95.

Museum/Library: Everything is going well.  MADL has contacted the Township and stated that the Library will be open on Thursdays from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. starting sometime in September.

Cemetery:  Tree trimming has taken place in the Cemetery and a new retaining wall is being installed on the North side of the main drive.

Planning Commission: The Planning Commission will hold a Public Hearing and Meeting on Monday, August 20, 2018.

Zoning Administrator:  The new hours for the Zoning Administrator will be:  Tuesdays 12:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. and Wednesdays 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Chamber of Commerce: The Chamber did not meet in July. The August Chamber luncheon and meeting will be held at the Ravenna Township Office.

Ravenna Area Historical Society:  They are still busy entering their entire inventory on to the computer.

Road Commission and Road update: Hoyle met with the Road Commission regarding sand potholes on Cline Road, Hile Road, Pontaluna Road and Seba Road and they have been repaired. Residents on Cline Road West of Blackmer Road have requested that we receive a bid regarding paving a portion of this road.  MCRC will be getting the bid to us soon.

Senior Citizen’s Activity Coordinator:  Peggy Manzer was present and stated that the Senior Luncheons will now be held at the Ravenna Baptist Church because more space was needed.  Each luncheon is averaging approximately 30 people.  Also, when there is a special activity at the luncheon the activity will begin at 11:30 and the luncheon will follow.  This will allow for people to be able to stay and visit after they eat if they wish to.  The Ravenna Baptist Church has approved allowing Peggy Manzer to use the Church 15 passenger van once a month to take the Senior Citizens shopping.  The first annual review meeting with Senior Resources will be held on September 19, 2018.  Peggy would to thank Sue Young and Chuck & Karen Wyant for all of their help every month.

Treasurer’s Report: Patterson presented the Treasurer’s report.  Motion by Yonker, support by Sherman to pay bills and accept the Treasurer’s Report.  Motion carried.

Other Board Comments: Sherman reported that Ravenna Township had a 29.4% voter turn-out in the Primary Election.


Correspondence:  None.


Public Comment: Brandon Popps, Democratic Candidate for District 5 County Commissioner apologized for arriving late (6:45 p.m.). He wasn’t aware that we had changed the meeting time from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
