February 9, 2017

The February meeting of the Ravenna Township Board was called to order on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ravenna Township Office by Supervisor Elmer Hoyle. Pledge to the Flag was led by Fire Chief Greg Crowley. Prayer was led by Clerk Penny Sherman.  Members present were:  Elmer Hoyle, Supervisor; Sonja Patterson, Treasurer; Penny Sherman, Clerk; Bruce Yonker, Trustee and John Bonthuis, Trustee.  Also present were Fire Chief Greg Crowley and 3 residents.  Motion by Yonker, support by Bonthuis to approve the Agenda with a correction regarding the date.  Motion carried.  Motion by Bonthuis, support by Yonker to approve the minutes from the January 12, 2017 Township Board Meeting.  Motion carried.


Citizens Comments: None



Assessor: March Board of Review will be held on Monday, March 13, 2017 from 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and

1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. and Tuesday, March 14, 2017 from 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m. Patterson reported that the Village had not turned in to our office some PRE (Principal Residency Exemption) forms, but they will now be forwarding them to our office as soon as they receive them.


Fire Board:  Call report:  14 Medicals, 2 Fires (1 assists to Moorland and 1 was an assist to Casnovia).  Truck 1821 has a hole in the water tank.  The Fire Fighters are going to see what can be done to repair it.  The Annual Fire Department Bowling fundraiser was a huge success.  The Fire Fighters would like to thank everyone that donated and participated in the event.  People interested in a burn permit may go the web site: www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits.   Address signs are available to purchase for $20.00, if anyone is interested they should call the Township Hall at 231-853-6205.

Building Inspector: No activity.

Museum/Library: Anne Lewis is now our representative on the MADL (Muskegon Area District Library) board.  Motion by Patterson, support by Sherman to pay Lewis $50.00 per MADL board meeting and $30.00 for any addition meetings plus mileage for each meeting.  Motion carried.  The library door is not working correctly.  Bonthuis has ordered parts to repair it.


Cemetery:  We will begin to get prices to resurface the driveway.

Planning Commission: The Planning Commission met on January 16, 2017 regarding energy ordinances. The next Planning Commission meeting will be held Monday, March 20, 2017 at 7:00 p.m.


Zoning Administrator:  Everything is going fine.

Chamber of Commerce:  Monthly Chamber of Commerce luncheon and meeting will be Tuesday, February 14, 2017.

Ravenna Area Historical Society: The RAHS have been cleaning and rearranging the Museum.


Road Commission: Hoyle will be attending the Road Commission meeting on Wednesday, February 15, 2017.

New Business: Additional street lights were discussed.  Hoyle toured the Township and would like to place street lights on the following intersections:  Wilson & Blackmer; Pontaluna & Squires; Squires & Ellis and Ellis & Seba.  Sherman will contact the neighboring jurisdictions to see if they are willing to cost share the lights that cover both Townships.  Brining was discussed.  Last year the township hired MCL to do the brining.  Hoyle will meet with the salesman from MCL and see if they can put a stronger solution on the roads.  The township attorney is correcting the property deed regarding a piece of school property that is in Ravenna Township.  The legal descriptions were incorrectly filed back in 1994 and will now be corrected.


Unfinished Business:  Judson Road and the impassable condition of the road were discussed.  Residents of Judson Road are requesting that action be taken soon because this road has become dangerous.


Treasurers Report: Patterson presented the Treasurer’s report.  Motion by Yonker, support by Sherman to pay all bills and accept the Treasurer’s Report.  Motion carried.


Public Comment: A citizen that doesn’t live on Judson Road also requested that this road be repaired for safety reasons.


Other Board Comment: Sherman will be contacting Republic, the Muskegon County Solid Waste Management and Padnos to schedule our Annual Dump Day and Tire Recycle. Coopersville Area Public Schools will be holding an election on May 2, 2017 for an Operating Millage Renewal Proposal.  Ravenna Township currently has 339 voters eligible to vote in the Coopersville Area Public School election.  Sherman gave a voting equipment update.  Bonthuis will be contacting MTS to see what permits are mandated by the State.
