The July meeting of the Ravenna Township Board was called to order on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ravenna Township Hall by Supervisor Elmer Hoyle. Pledge to the Flag was led by Hoyle. Prayer was led by Clerk Penny Sherman.  Members present were:  Elmer Hoyle, Supervisor; Sonja Patterson, Treasurer; Penny Sherman, Clerk; Bruce Yonker, Trustee and John Bonthuis, Trustee.  Also present were Fire Chief Greg Crowley, Zach Lahring, Republican Candidate for 5th District County Commissioner, Brandon Popps, Democratic Candidate for 5th District County Commissioner, and one resident.  Motion by Yonker, support by Bonthuis to approve the agenda with the addition of addressing the August meeting date.  Motion carried.   Motion by Bonthuis, support by Yonker to approve the minutes from the June 26, 2018 Public Hearing and Special Meeting.  Motion carried.

Citizens Comments: None.


Assessor: Board of Review will be held on Tuesday, July 17, 2018.  This BOR is only for clerical errors.

Fire Board:  Call report:  15 Medicals and 3 P.I.’s.  The new Porta tank lift should be here next week. A price quote for $71,553.00 was received for 10 new SCBA complete packs; 10 spare bottles (one for each pack); face masks w/case for each Firefighter and 2 will have thermal imaging cameras attached.  Motion by Sherman, support by Yonker to go forward with purchasing the SCBA equipment.  Motion carried.  An application has been received from Zach McCleary to join the Ravenna Area Fire Department. Motion by Patterson, support by Sherman to appoint Zach McCleary as a Probationary Fire Fighter. The Fire Department will be holding a Pork Dinner during Dog Daze, Friday, July 20th.  Motion carried.  People interested in a burn permit may go the web site: www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits.   Address signs are available to purchase for $20.00, if anyone is interested they should call the Township Hall at 231-853-6205.

Building Inspector: Six permits were issued:  2 Building, 2 Electrical and 2 Mechanical. The 10% reimbursement check from MTS was $210.60.

Museum/Library: Everything is going well.  Mary’s Lunch Program is in full swing and going great.  Sack lunches are handed out on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and a hot lunch is served on Thursdays at the Ravenna United Methodist Church.  The Makerspace at the Library is being used by a lot of people on a daily basis.  They are taking crafting donations if anyone would like to donate to this area of the Library.

Cemetery:  Historian William Hanson was in and spoke to Clerk Sherman.  He is working on putting all of the County cemeteries on the County website and they are working on uploading the Ravenna Cemetery now.

Planning Commission: Did not meet.

Zoning Administrator:  Everything is going fine.

Chamber of Commerce: The Chamber did not meet in July. The August Chamber luncheon and meeting will be held at the Ravenna Township Office.

Ravenna Area Historical Society:  They have brought in the information needed for the audit.

Road Commission and Road update: Hoyle attended the Road Commission meeting. Hoyle will also attend the Road Commission meeting next Wednesday.

Senior Citizen’s Activity Coordinator:  The July luncheon was held at Ravenna Baptist Church and was very well attended. The August luncheon will also be held at the Ravenna Baptist Church.  They are looking at taking two trips a month to Muskegon to get groceries as a couple of their activities.

New Business: Zach Lahring, Republican Candidate for 5th District County Commissioner was present to introduce himself.  Zach lives in Ravenna Township and states that he is a Prolife Constitutional Conservative.  Brandon Popps, Democratic Candidate for 5th District County Commissioner was present to introduce himself.  Brandon lives in Sullivan Township, but grew up in the Wolf Lake area.  Brandon states that he has attended some of the County Commission meetings and feels that he would be a positive influence on the County Board of Commissioners.  Zach Lahring will be running against one other Candidate in the August Primary.  The winner of the Republican Primary will run against Brandon Popps in the November General Election, because Brandon is unopposed in the Primary Election.  The Ravenna Township Board thanked both Candidates for attending our Board Meeting.

Unfinished Business:  None.

Treasurer’s Report: Patterson presented the Treasurer’s report.  Motion by Bonthuis, support by Yonker to pay bills and accept the Treasurer’s Report.  Motion carried.

Other Board Comments: Motion by Patterson, support by Yonker to hire Bonthuis Enterprises to pour concrete at the entrance of the Fire Station and remove the shrubbery for a price of $2,500.00. Motion carried.  Motion by Sherman, support by Patterson to approve Ravenna Township using the following: Choice One Bank for tax collection;  Mika Meyers Law Firm; Audit firm of Brickley DeLong; Lake Michigan Credit Union; Choice One Bank; and West Michigan Burial Vault Company.  Motion carried.  Employee pay rates are:  Administrative Assistant $15.50 per hour, Cemetery and Maintenance employee $11.00 per hour, Cemetery Maintenance Assistant $9.25 per hour.  Election Inspectors $11.00 per hour. Motion carried.   Motion by Patterson, support by Sherman to approve the office being closed for the following holidays:  New Year’s Day, President’s Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Friday after Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve.  Motion carried.  Motion by Hoyle, support by Bonthuis to move the August Meeting Date from Thursday, August 9, 2018 to Thursday, August 16, 2018.  Motion carried. The Ravenna Township Election Commission approved the following Election Inspectors to work the 8-7-18 Primary Election for Ravenna Township:  Penny Sherman, Sonja Patterson, Sue Grover, Glenna Wright, Laura Moyer, Julie Palma, Sandy Rollenhagen, Anne Lewis and Jennifer Gill.


Correspondence:  None.


Public Comment: A question was asked regarding what other work would be done on Judson Road. Hoyle will ask the Road Commission at their next meeting.  Another asked that Hoyle talk to the Road Commission regarding the amount of traffic on Cline Road between Ravenna Road and Adams Road.

Quality of brine was discussed. Ravenna Township went with Muskegon County Road Commission to brine our roads this year and the quality of product used was much better than the other two companies we had contracted with the past couple of years.


Motion by Yonker, support by Bonthuis to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried.
