RAVENNA TOWNSHIP BOARD MEETING MINUTESJune 8, 2017

The May meeting of the Ravenna Township Board was called to order on Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Ravenna Township Office by Supervisor Elmer Hoyle. Pledge to the Flag was led by Supervisor Elmer Hoyle. Prayer was led by Supervisor Hoyle.  Members present were:  Elmer Hoyle, Supervisor; Sonja Patterson, Treasurer; Penny Sherman, Clerk; Bruce Yonker, Trustee and John Bonthuis, Trustee.  Also present were Fire Chief Greg Crowley, Jon Venlet, Financial Advisor for Modern Woodmen, State Senate Candidate Jon Bumstead and 4 residents.  Motion by Yonker, support by Patterson to approve the Agenda as presented.  Motion carried.  Motion by Bonthuis, support by Patterson to approve the minutes from the May 18, 2017 Township Board Meeting.  Motion carried.

 

Citizens Comments: None.

 

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Assessor: Cory Burns will be working with Dennis Burns as our Assessor.  Dan Joslyn has retired.
Fire Board:  Call report:  19 Medicals and 6 Fires (2 assists to Moorland and 1 assist to Casnovia).  John Bonthuis will take care of removing the siren from the roof.  The Fire Department will be holding a Pig Roast Dinner Fundraiser during Dog Daze which will be held on July 21st.  People interested in a burn permit may go the web site: www.dnr.state.mi.us/burnpermits.   Address signs are available to purchase for $20.00, if anyone is interested they should call the Township Hall at 231-853-6205.

Building Inspector: 3 Building Permits were issued this month.

Museum/Library: Jon Venlet, Financial Representative with Modern Woodmen was here to introduce himself and to tell us about a fundraiser that they are doing for the Library in partnership with the Friends of the Library.  Modern Woodmen will match $2500.00 for this fundraiser.  They are looking to do a benefit food luncheon with a silent auction and door prizes.  The fundraiser will go to improve the Tweens & Teens section of the Library (ages of approximately 10 – 17 year olds).  They are hoping to hold the fundraiser on August 19th in the West side yard of the Library.  Jon’s company is looking to do other service projects as well.  We look forward to having Modern Woodmen in our area and hope they are very successful.  Sonja and Penny addressed a concern at the Library about reducing clutter within the Library.  John Bonthuis reported that the Library door and light have been repaired.

 

Cemetery:  Sexton Larry Darcy did a great job getting the Cemetery ready for Memorial Day and it looked very beautiful.

Planning Commission: The Planning Commission will hold a meeting on Monday, June 19, 2017 to discuss Alternative Energy Ordinances with the Township Attorney. The Township Board will also be attending this meeting.

 

Zoning Administrator:  No report.

Chamber of Commerce:  The Ravenna Area Chamber of Commerce will not meet in June or July.  They will meet again on August 8, 2017 at the Ravenna Township Office for their monthly luncheon and meeting.

Ravenna Area Historical Society: The RAHS will be purchasing a computer from CCS Technologies.

 

Road Commission: Hoyle stated that MCRC have not yet met this month. Hoyle also stated that we need to replace 24 road signs and 110 posts.  We will contact local companies to get a price for these signs.

New Business: Sherman presented an Authorization For Change In Standard Lighting Contract (Company owned) Form 547 and Resolution.  Motion by Patterson, support Bonthuis to approve this Authorization For Change In Standard Lighting Contract (Company owned) Form 547 and Resolution.  Motion carried.

 

Unfinished Business:  Judson Road was discussed.  A resident reported that there has not been much support in favor of proceeding with the Special Assessment.  Hoyle will report this to the MCRC.  Resident feels that the responsibility to repair should fall upon the County do to their lack of maintenance of the Road.

 

Treasurers Report: Patterson presented the Treasurer’s report.  Motion by Sherman, support by Bonthuis to pay bills and accept the Treasurer’s Report.  Motion carried.

 

Other Board Comment: The Budget Workshop Meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at 5:00 p.m.   Patterson reported that Laura Moyer came through her surgery well and is home recuperating.  We are all praying for her speedy recovery!

 

Correspondence: None

 

Public Comment: Jon Bumstead was here to introduce himself and to let us know that he will be running in the 2018 Election for the Michigan 34th Senate District seat.   He is a former State Representative for the Newaygo County area and will be running for the seat currently held by Senator Hanson when his term expires.

 

Motion by Bonthuis, support by Yonker to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried.  Meeting adjourned at 8:27 p.m.
